Violence in schools background info

Things you may not know

As I said in the response thread to my first entry, for me the real story in the Virginia Tech massacre is the way that most of the mainstream media is using the tragedy as an banner for gun control.

Or as I prefer, victim disarmament.

Here is some background that may not be aware of. Not enough for a story by themselves, but I'd like to get them out of my stack.

Illya Somin at The Volokh Conspiracy found that school shootings in the U.S. are not nearly as common as people think.

Canadian economist Pierre Lemieux finds that mass killings are rare when guns are easily available, and tend to increase as guns become more controlled.

And our old friend Radley Balko (who I have been accused of over-quoting) points out that even as Dr. Phil jumps on the anti-violence bandwagon, juvenile violent crime has been dropping for fifteen years,

So is it really about saving lives? Or is it about disarming people?
