Chairman of the JCOS steps over the line and down the road

I'm one of the first people to defend free speech.

However, an officer's personal views should not color his duty. When he is in uniform, he is a flag officer and representing the entire service. When the flag officer is also the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that goes triple.

Regardless of his choices, he has no right OR power to impose that morality on those under his command or to speak to the press about that morality. He can talk about ethics and the traditions of the service, but morality is forbidden for good reason.

Off duty and out of uniform, he certainly has every right to speak for himself.

On duty, well, he might has well have said that Muslims have no place in the military.

At least he had both the class and brass to apologize for his actions.
