Bush's speech

Noisy, but it accomplishes nothing except cashing in on political benefits

I've been looking over the transcripts of President Bush's speech.

If it looks like amnesty and it sounds like amnesty and it smells like amnesty, do you suppose it is amnesty?

The Federal government has been selectively enforcing the law for decades. That is largely why we have the problems we do.

Because of that selective enforcement, an illegal immigrant from Mexico has a much better chance to benefit by breaking the law than by obeying it.

This proposal will spend a lot of money and dangle a very big carrot in front of desperate Mexicans. And in ten years, we get to do it ALL AGAIN.

There is a reason why immigration reform hasn't worked anytime in the last few decades. We keep changing the cost of NOT obeying the law to allow for those already here.

Politicos want the draconian laws so they can say that they are "getting tough" on illegal immigration. But they want to be able to "show compassion." All that happens is the U.S. is ends up with people who have no interest in assimilating to the culture and expect special privileges. And that assumes they are interested in obeying the laws.

This just makes the problem worse.

Notice how Real ID is a prominent part of the "solution."

I'm willing to hazard a couple of predictions.

First, I bet that the legislation will have all sorts of weasel room to keep it from being enforced against the illegals.

Second, I bet that there will be some sort of clause that will make it a felony if you do not report suspected immigration violations.
