"Government isn't the most efficient"

Talk show reveals the truth

I was just channel surfing while scarfing a late lunch. One of the news channels was discussing the recent TB case that has come to national attention and the failings of the CDC. One of the guests made an interesting point but I don't think she realized the full implications. Paraphrasing, she said something like "Am I going to argue that the government is the most efficient? No, I'm not."

Unintentionally, she put her finger on it.

Government will never be the most efficient because it is isolated from the market pressures that demand improvement.

The Centers for Disease Control doesn't get it's money from people like you and me who look at what's available and choose it. It gets it's money from Congress. At a very basic level, that means that the management won't listen to the average citizen, it will listen to Congressmen. Political imperatives will trump any other considerations.

Like it or not, the people who give cash are the only ones who can change it.
