Micro$oft going after Linux by claiming patent infringement

Hired gun lawyers fight a losing battle

Remember a couple of days ago when I told you about a company suing Apple, Real Networks, and others for not using their software?

The big heavy Micro$oft is pulling the same stunt but for different reasons.

But now there's a shadow hanging over Linux and other free software, and it's being cast by Microsoft (Charts, Fortune 500). The Redmond behemoth asserts that one reason free software is of such high quality is that it violates more than 200 of Microsoft's patents. And as a mature company facing unfavorable market trends and fearsome competitors like Google (Charts, Fortune 500), Microsoft is pulling no punches: It wants royalties. If the company gets its way, free software won't be free anymore.

Micro$oft waited until now to pull this little stunt because they expected Vista sales to mop the floor with everything else out there. Now they know that isn't going to happen so their only choice is to throw the biggest monkey wrench they can into someone else's works.

Remember, the entire Micro$oft empire isn't built on software development, but on controlling the desktop computer environment. Bill Gates owes more to his lawyers than to his programmers. But the times, they are a changin'. No one can control the market forever.

Even Ford had it's Edsel.

And Micro$oft has it's Vista.
