"How Ethanol Works"

Web reference does a pretty good article on the alternative fuel

How Stuff Works has a pretty good piece on ethanol.

There are a couple of things I want to stress.

Every drop of ethanol produced in the United States is partially paid for by Federal subsidy. That distorts the costs of production.

A gallon of ethanol produces less power than a gallon of gasoline.

Using existing methods, plant waste can't be used to produce ethanol. That means that productive farmland has to be used to raise corn, which drives up food prices. That distorts the cost of production even more.
