Rumors and competitionWhat may be in the works for the Palm
Treo
My Palm m515 is getting a bit long in the tooth
these days. A few months back I was looking at getting a Treo 650. There have
been times when I actually thought a cellphone might be worth the trouble.
Usually I just pound my head against the wall until the feeling goes away, but
that wasn't working this time.
I use my Palm a lot. If I am going to (shudder) make the jump to a cellphone, I want something that gives me at least the functionality I've got now. The Treo 650 looks nice, it combines a Palm device, a camera, and a cellphone. It's Bluetooth compatible. But unfortunately it takes a memory hit. There is only about 25 megs of usable memory in the main memory, although it accepts memory cards. If it weren't for the memory limitations, the geek factor alone would probably have sold me. Verizon would have to be my cell phone carrier, there is no other company that gives decent coverage in the Westerm states outside the major cities. I knew it was getting time because one of my favorite Palm programs just got updated to run on Palm OS 5. What is the use of having a PDA if it can't make annoying science fiction sounds? I haven't exactly been impressed by Windows PDAs. And Blackberry, well, it has the wrong form factor. But there have been rumors of a Palm Treo 700w running WindowsCE. Hopefully that implies a Treo 700p. And Palm and Verizon have a press conference on Monday. Hmmm. If it's true, it may have sold me. This would solve the memory issues. I would still prefer the Palm OS though. But without competition, we'd still be in the days of the original Palm Pilot. There wouldn't be Windows CE devices or Blackberrys. A Palm with WiFi, high speed internet, Bluetooth and a cell phone is enough to drool over. Posted: Sat - September 24, 2005 at 04:15 PM
