Privately secure

Is airline security better now, or just more annoying?

There was an entry at Catellarchy that got me thinking. Specifically this paragraph.

I have no idea if it would have happened anyway, but I can’t imagine how anyone can argue with a straight face that 9/11 is in any way evidence that the airlines are not capable of providing their own security, or that the government is somehow better equipped to do so.

I immediately thought of Las Vegas. Huge amounts of cash move through the casinos every day, but most people don't think twice about the security. It's deliberately designed so that most of the security is out of the public view. That doesn't mean that it is always nice. And it doesn't mean that it is perfect either. But in the long run, the casinos know that it is cheaper for them to provide most of their own security, while sharing information on cheats and scam artists with other casinos and with the local police.

So why can't we do the same thing for the airlines?
