Television standoff

Content rights in Northern Arizona

I've been watching a free market saga a little closer to home.

Arizona doesn't have that many television stations. Many citizens get their "local" television from cable. One of the major cable providers, Cable One, provides my cable service. Well, as of January 1st, it could no longer carry the NBC stations because negotiations fell through. Both the Flagstaff and Phoenix NBC stations are owned by the same company.

It turns out that there is a law that prevents cable companies from providing network television from stations other than in the "local" area, so they can't just bring in a Utah or Nevada station.

Now personally I would be on the side of the cable company in this. After all, I am missing The West Wing and KPNX gets ad revenue based on viewership all over the state.

But Cable One has annoyed me. In their signal, they urge people to contact the two U.S. Senators from Arizona. And that tells me that they aren't interested in negotiation.
