Down but not out

Thunderstorm and modems

This last Wednesday brought a hard rain thunderstorm. Nothing like a hurricane, but for a few minutes the rain was coming down as hard as hail. And then CRACK! The power went out for about 45 minutes.

When it came up, I couldn't get back online. It didn't take long to narrow it down to the cable modem. The cable company is the most reliable ISP around, but I have had this argument with them before. The question was: who was going to pay for the modem?

The last time it happened, I won the argument, but barely. So when I was having electrical work done, I had the electrician drop a new line with a GFCI plug. It was a dedicated circuit just like the old one, the only things plugged into it were the cable modem and the AirPort Extreme wireless base station. All the VCRs and the television have surge suppressors (gee, I somehow forgot to get one for the cable modem *grins*).

So it was pretty obvious that it was the cable company that was at fault. Late Thursday, they agreed to give me another modem free of charge.

Friday the cable was down in my area, but Friday night it came up and several of the "fuzzy" channels are now clear. I've got only one questionable channel now, and it's the local ad channel, so no big loss.

I've been complaining about those channels and the self-destructing internet connection for years.

Competition would REALLY help, but I'm at least satisfied now. Especially with the credit on my bill.
