I'm back...In which the demon Murphy conspires with
my cable company

I didn't quite expect that, but at least this time it wasn't lack of sleep. After my cable modem started giving out the dreaded Pungent Blue Smoke of Electronic Death (fourth one to fry in the last year), my local cable company and I got into an argument over who was going to pay for the replacement one. They kept blaming my home network, which only has an AirPort Extreme (WiFi router) physically connected to cable modem, and both are plugged into a UPS. Finally they started checking the outside wiring, and it seems that the "booster box" (and yes, that is what the tech called it) two telephone poles down was sending voltage spikes. Result, no effect on television tuners but enough to do strange, unnatural things to cable modems. Then we had the go around about installing the cable company's software on my Macintosh computers. It is not necessary and never has been, my iBook can find the modem setup page by itself. Configuration is a snap. And now, only FIVE days later, I am back with internet. So hello world, I am back. September 10, 2007 Well, that is what I wrote weeks ago. But then I went to post and my trusty iBook locked up. I did a reboot, and then my computer couldn't find the built in hard drive. It's been interesting, including several experiences that never should have happened to someone who calls himself a technopagan, but I am back now. Sort of. This one is more of a test than anything else to see if I can still upload files. Posted: Mon - September 10, 2007 at 02:19 PM
