Worm warning

Making the rounds

The hosting company for this site, Itsamac, sent this message.

Neo,

The source code for the Sober.Z worm (worms are similar to a computer viruses), which began infecting Windows OS computers worldwide on Nov. 21, indicates that the author(s) are planning to launch another attack on Thursday, Jan. 5 and Friday 6, to coincide with the 87th anniversary of the founding of the Nazi Party. On these dates, PCs infected with Sober.Z will be instructed to connect to numerous servers to download malicious code that will likely send out German and English language email hate messages. This Sober.Z worm does not effect Macintosh users.

There is a possibility of many thousands of infected Windows OS machines sending these types of email messages and overloading email servers worldwide. There may be problems or delays with email systems delivering your valid messages.

We encourage you to inform users of Windows OS computers to update and run their antivirus software.

Also, we can't express strongly enough to everybody to never open suspicious email, even if it appears to be from a sender they know. As well, do not open email attachments you were not expecting.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

My personal computers and the computers hosting this site are Macintosh, there should not be any problems with these machines. As a rule, I do not do mass emailings and I never send attachments unless I know the person.

If you have received an suspicious email with an attachment from paganvigil dot com, paganvigil dot net, or paganvigil dot org, please do not open the attachment. This will not be a message from me.
