"Your government failed you"

A huge centralized bureaucracy can't AND won't do the job

In the aftermath of Katrina, I can't help but notice some things.

First, there is almost a universal condemnation of government, in particular the Federal government, for failing to meet what was promised. First in terms of flood control and levee construction, and then in disaster response.

Second, the only long term "solutions" that are being considered are more money and more power being given to the FedGovs.

There has got to be another way.

Before we create another fiasco like Homeland Security or pass another "emergency" bill like the USAPATRIOT Act, I think we need to ask if the Federal government will keep it's promises. Here's one that sums up how I feel.

Virtually all useful help – from search and rescue to rebuilding – will come from decentralized sources.  No governor, no beltway bureaucrat, and certainly no U.S. President, has sufficient knowledge of what must be done and how best to do it.  It’s a fantasy to suppose that Washington can ‘save’ or even give much help to New Orleanians today.  The vast majority of good and even great deeds will be performed by individuals, with no direction from DC or from any government agency.  Individuals each in his or her own unique circumstances, each knowing of unique problems and opportunities, are the ones who will save lives, help re-unite families, and assist in rebuilding homes and infrastructure.

I have great faith in the American people. We want to help, it's damn near a part of our DNA. I have no faith in the ability of the government to marshall that desire.

This morning I was skimming news channels. One of Louisiana's Senators was saying that it is time to throw the rule book away.
