New Mexico considering tax rebates to offset high gas and heating oil prices

It's a shell game with numbers

I heard this one on NPR this morning.

I'm all for tax rebates, but let's do the math here.

New Mexico has a 270 million dollar budget surplus, mainly because of the higher market price for oil and gasoline.

Governor Bill Richardson has proposed a 100 million dollar rebate program.

By my numbers, that leaves approximately 170 million unaccounted for.

After all, if it is a surplus, then the entire amount should be returned.

But this way Governor Richardson gets political points for being a good guy sympathetic to the public interest while the state gets to keep almost 63% of the budget surplus without anyone paying attention.

Bottom line, taxes are still too high and the people of New Mexico are getting rooked.

That's government for you, always looking out for the little guy.
