Racism or disaster?

Who wants to blame hurricane deaths on racism?

Terry Michael has an article on Real Clear Politics.

Never mind that Katrina was nearly biblical in proportion, that the mayor of New Orleans is black, that the police chief is black and that city and state governments have primary responsibility for first-response protection of their people. No, don't let those facts get between us and our TV anchors, who rush to provide us with their own thinly disguised McCarthy-like insinuations of racism in their "tough" questions of politicians. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour had it just about right when, responding to one of those "questions," he replied: "Is this an interview or an argument?"

I've been repeatedly slammed for not being compassionate enough and daring to suggest that the ruling political class of Louisiana purposely chose to keep people dependent on the good will of government. For all the good intentions, the money was siphoned off into other projects. And then when it all collapsed, that political class dared to say that the rest of the country (and President Bush specifically) hadn't cared enough.
