Bush shows contempt of citizens

The President attempts to crust dissent

George Bush has lost touch. Of course it's an amnesty bill.

President Bush today accused opponents of his proposed immigration measure of fear-mongering to defeat it in Congress, and took on his own conservative political base as he did so.

“If you want to scare the American people, what you say is the bill’s an amnesty bill,” Mr. Bush said this afternoon at a training center for border enforcement agents located in this town in Georgia’s southeastern corner. “That’s empty political rhetoric, trying to frighten our citizens.”

The president used some of his toughest language yet as he began an effort to build support for the bill in the Senate. The measure hews closely to his long-sought goal of a new immigration system with three components: tighter seals on the nation’s borders, a guest-worker system for noncitizens who want to work here, and a path to citizenship for some 12 million illegal immigrants already in the country.

Let's see. People broke the law to be here. They will be forgiven, excused from any legal consequences, and offered citizenship. How in the world is that not amnesty?

I think my biggest problem with this whole mess is the politicos who know there is bad immigration law on the books, but rather than repealing it, they keep creating exceptions. That gives us the worst of all possibilities.

And it undermines the rule of law.

I do believe that we have far too many laws on the books in this country. But that doesn't mean I don't respect the rule of law. It means that I get tired of the rule of law being abused by every fire-breathing politico who thinks the Country Would Run Better If He Ran Things.

My own theory of law is much simpler. Make as few laws as possible, make them uniform, and then strictly enforce every single one with no exceptions.

If a law needs exceptions or is not uniform, that should tell you it is a bad law. Period.

And any bill that is hammered out in secret with the plan to be rushed through Congress without debate is probably a bad bill too. After all, look at the Patriot Act.

Addendum - I knew I could count on Michelle Malkin to throw fuel on the fire. She throws the Constitution at Bush. Effectively too, I might add. I am not really sure how I feel about agreeing with her on this one issue, but she is right in this case.
