War czar?

Cutting the Pentagon out of the command loop?

Okay, I missed the announcement of this office. But this is not a good sign.

After a frustrating search for a new "war czar" to oversee the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, ABC News has learned that President Bush has chosen the Pentagon's director of operations, Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, for the role.

In the newly created position of assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser for Iraq and Afghanistan policy and implementation, Lute would have the power to direct the Pentagon, State Department and other agencies involved in the two conflicts.

Lute would report directly to the president and to National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley.

Let's see, we have the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the general staff, and the entire chain of command, but that wasn't enough? What's more, according to the article, the "war czar" answers to the National Security Advisor and the President.

In other words, none of those pesky Pentagon leaks to Congress.

Now normally, I am a supporter of Presidential power when it comes to the military. But this just looks bad, and I am not even sure if it is legal.
