More on the Wiccan grave marker suit

It's a first step, but a good one.

Wiccans will be allowed to have the symbol of their religion placed on grave markers in national cemeteries under a lawsuit settlement with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced Monday.

The settlement calls for the Wiccans' pentacle, a five-pointed star representing earth, air, fire, water and spirit to be placed on grave markers within 14 days for those who have pending requests with the VA.

Because I am Pagan, this is a story that keeps dogging me. I'm glad to see the Wiccan vets get their symbol.

But since when does freedom of religion mean a religious symbol from an "approved" list?

What about the other Pagans who aren't Wiccan?

As far as I am concerned, a vet's grave marker should have ANY symbol the family chooses. Up to and including Daffy Duck and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Sadly I think this decision is the last that most Pagans will pay attention to the problem. They got "their" symbol, so they are willing to overlook the bigger picture.

Hat tip Wren's Nest.
