The "iPod for every student" proposal gets buried

Politics as usual

This is an update to my post from April 6. Seems like the criticism was too much.

House Democrats tried to bury a distracting controversy Thursday, saying a statement made last week about providing iPods for Michigan students had been misconstrued and was unfairly overshadowing the state's budget crisis.

Democrats, at least for now, aren't considering providing an iPod or MP3 player for Michigan students. House Speaker Andy Dillon, D-Redford, said in a statement this week the initiative can't be pursued until the state has settled its budget problems.

Two observations here. First, it wasn't actually ruled out, just delayed. That means that politicos get double credit, not just for proposing and supporting the idea, but putting it off until the budget problems are solved.

Second, it opens up the idea of higher taxes. If you want your kid to have a government provided music box, you will have to dig deep. Far deeper than the gadget would cost the parents if they bought it direct.

Amazing how that works, isn't it?

And the politicos take no blame, because they didn't actually come out and state the conditions.
