About that moonbase

The politics of grandstanding

I believe that humanity belongs in space.

I don't believe that NASA is the thing that will get us there.

I firmly believe that the moon program decimated the private space effort.

So when I read about this proposed moon base, I worry.

On the one hand, we need a presence on the moon. Anyone who has ever read The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress by Heinlein knows that. Long story short, it's much easier to throw things from the moon to Earth than it is from Earth to the moon. And it doesn't even have to be an explosive, just something big.

On the other hand, government money and government technocrats won't be able to pull it off. Maybe if it was a purely military mission, but not a mixed use base.

More importantly, we can't have politicos controlling space travel.
