Election year noises

The stem cell "issue"

Personally, I can't believe that the whole stem cell thing has been a campaign issue.

Again.

Two things.

First and most importantly, embryonic stem cell research was not banned. The bill that President Bush signed just prevented Federal funding for anything except previously designated stem cell lines. It did nothing to stop privately funded research.

Second, the possibility of Federal funding keeps private funds away.

Third, despite the hype, there are no practical uses for embryonic stem cells yet.

Fourth, this isn't a moral issue. It's being cast as one, but it boils down to certain companies wanting unlimited Federal funding for their R&D. Under those circumstances, the act of research turns a profit, even if usable results never come. It amazes me that the same people who go after Haliburton are willing to give an even bigger sweetheart deal for embryonic stem cell research.
