Comparing apples to oranges to bananas

Just because journalists deny a bias doesn't mean one doesn't exist.

Editor & Publisher reports on a new survey comparing journalist opinion and public opinion.

"Asked who they voted for in the past election, the journalists reported picking Kerry over Bush by 68% to 25%. In this sample of 300 journalists, from both newspapers and TV, Democrats outnumbered Republicans by 3 to 1--but about half claim to be Independent. As in previous polls, a majority (53%) called their political orientation “moderate,” versus 28% liberal and 10% conservative."

People are entitled to their own opinion, I've no doubt of that. But the politics in this country is fairly closely divided. Industry wide disparity like that doesn't just happen by chance. Especially when that same industry prides itself on it's "objectivity" and "fairness."

I think journalism is at it's best when it advocates. But it is at it's worse when pretends to be balanced while shoveling propaganda. Competition keeps all sides honest.
