Raich reactions

Thoughts after wandering the blogosphere

I've been reading newspaper articles, blogs, and people's posts to blogs whenever I could spare the time the last few days.

My results are unscientific, I haven't had time to note which comments I wanted to come back to reference. People are posting on this topic faster than I can read, and that is saying something. I think I have noticed some trendlines though, at least outside of the press.

Almost every libertarian I have read is outraged. No surprises there.

Among conservatives, there seems to be about a 2 to 1 split (again, these findings are my own guesstimates) with the majority disagreeing strongly and the minority going for the "our country, right or wrong" angle.

But it is the progressive reaction that is really interesting. The majority opinion here does seem to be that the court did the "right" (pun intended, I couldn't resist) thing, if only because the PC group in the Court was the majority. Oddly enough, I can't find anyone on the left who praises the decision itself.

But there is a fair amount of reluctant praise for Justice Thomas. Perhaps more importantly, there is a small but very vocal minority proclaiming that this time, the court went too far.

Could this be a cascade event? Could this be thing that makes people take a long hard look at exactly what their government is doing in their name? Could this thing be the spark that brings people together in outrage?

I don't know. But I have hopes. And I think I will go read some more. And maybe nudge a bit here and there.
