Supreme Court nomination

Judge Roberts is neither the savior of the conservatives or the demon of the liberals

So far it's been hard to get a read on Judge Roberts, partially just to get through all the noise that both conservatives and liberals are making.

From the looks of things, President Bush could have nominated Al Gore and still gotten flak from some liberals. Conservatives like Ann Coulter claim that Roberts is a dangerous choice.

The People for the American Way have their own biased report, while the Committee for Justice has their own bias.

I do object strongly to advocacy groups claiming that briefs that Roberts filed as a attorney have anything whatsoever to do with either his opinions or his philosophies. That is sort of like claiming that a lawyer defending someone accused of a crime is guilty of that same crime.

Looking over Judge Roberts' record, there is one case that stands out, the french fry case. He heard the appeal (free registration required). There isn't much else that catches my attention.

Personally I would prefer someone who is more of an originalist. Yes, that might put reproductive rights back into the debate (which would not be a bad thing), but it also would mean a court less likely to stretch the powers of government as happened in Raich and Kelo.
