The final tally is in

Long term for Iraq

The Iraqis have approved their Constitution. Despite the qualifications in the New York Times piece, the people of Iraq have taken the next important step.

This isn't going to solve all the problems, this doesn't mean that the coalition starts pulling out tomorrow.

But this was the election that some thought would never happen when Mr. Bush announced that the U.S. would be invading Iraq. Even I thought it would take more than a decade.

In my view, this means that the U.S. restitution is well underway.

Yes, restitution.

For decades, the United States used alliances with the Persian Gulf nations to help contain the Soviet Union in the Cold War. We supported regimes that should have long since been overthrown. Undoubtedly, they were able to exist as long as they have because of American support. At the time it was the least bad choice, like so much of diplomacy. The U.S.S.R. could not be allowed control of that much oil, so the United States cut deals with tyrants.

It's not a particularly proud moment for the United States and it had some terrible consequences. So now we are trying to fix it.

A semi-democratic Iraq with a free market will have huge repercussions all over the area. It will not take long for people in other countries to start asking questions.

Me, I am betting on the aunts and grandmothers.
