Illegal immigration causes environmental problems tooLeo W. Banks writes about the Minuteman project,
and there are other articles to show the unreported problems that the explosion
of illegal immigration has caused in Arizona.
If you don't live in Arizona, you may not know
what a huge disaster illegal immigration has
become.
Leo W. Banks has a good piece in OpinionJournal.com that looks at how the differences between how some of the media reported the Minuteman project and what was actually happening. Nobody knows how what percentage of illegals the Border Patrol actually catches, I've heard everything from 3% to 90%. My own personal guestimate is somewhere between 20 and 30 percent. Using those numbers, that means about 117,000 undocumented and illegal immigrants come through Arizona per month, or about 1.4 million per year. In addition to overwhelming the hospitals, law enforcement, social services, transportation, and housing, there is a huge environmental impact that no one wants to talk about. This isn't a forest with a high growth rate, it's a desert. It will take thousands of years to recover from some of the damage. Besides the destruction of national monuments and parks, ranchers have had their private property vandalized and destroyed. If it were U.S. citizens doing this to another nation, not only would they be arrested, but there would be demands that justice be served and the planet protected. As it is, the PC crowd just ignores the problem or tries to blame Arizona for it. Undeniably, there are things that lure illegals here. Two things stand out to me though. First are the widespread government funded social benefits. If people think they are getting something for nothing, then demand for that something is ALWAYS going to go up. Second are the court rulings and laws that prevent those social services from being denied to non-citizens. And the President and certain members of Congress want to offer a "guest worker program." Why do I think that will only make the problem worse? Posted: Thu - May 19, 2005 at 05:26 PM
