With LIBERTY And Justice For All

Update on the Indiana divorce decree against Wicca

The Indiana Court of Appeals found that the original judge overstepped his authority. I talked about the original case here and here.

I'm cautiously optimistic on this one.

On the one hand, I am absolutely thrilled for parents and the child.

On the other hand, that word "mainstream" that has been batted around, that concerns me.

In almost all the regular news articles I saw on the subject, each reported mentioned that Wicca was becoming more and more mainstream in the United States. How Wicca didn't worship Satan. How there were more Wiccans in the U.S. than Sikhs or Jainists. And so on.

I'm not a Wiccan myself. I am a Neopagan, although I prefer the term Pagan. Wicca is probably the best known of the various Neopagan faiths, but it is far from a universal guide to Neopaganism. Although some Wiccans think it should be...

It seems to me from following the news that to the public, the central issue wasn't religious freedom, but whether Wicca was a "mainstream religion."

The possible implications from that worry me.

Government has no business deciding which religion (or lack of religion) is or is not acceptable. It doesn't matter if it is mainstream or not. The ONLY time I can see that government has any business opposing religion is to prevent physical harm to others.

I am going to be watching this with a very concerned eye.
