Teaching democracy

How to convince people that democracy is a good idea?

A couple of weeks ago I had a great talk with a friend about teaching democracy. How do you convince people who have no frame of reference?

You don't really. You start with simpler concepts.

In the West, we're spoiled. We forget just how long democracy had to get established. If you go back to the earliest written records, it took more than 2500 years from the Greek democracies to us. And there were a lot of missteps along the way.

While we would like to ascribe democracy to higher motives. the enlightened self interest theory makes a lot more sense. The real roots of democracy are in trade. Property rights were the first rights recognized.
