"We were really caught off guard."

Public school puts student information on the internet. Accidently. Expect more of the same,

Another school district accidently published student's private information online. Big surprise.

This bit was particularly telling.

One reason the problem was resolved in days instead of weeks is because Google has dealt with this kind of situation before.

But what I really found disturbing was this from later in the story.

In the digital age, it will always be something, said Avivah Litan, an analyst for Gartner Inc. who specializes in identity theft and privacy research.

Hundreds of schools, universities and companies find themselves answering questions about stolen laptops, unprotected servers and accidental Web postings. And the problem is likely to get worse before it gets better, she said.

So we should just assume that any information about us is bound to be exposed sooner or later? Including information that we are required by law to give government agencies?

Boy, talk about government incompetence.

Wouldn't it be better if we questioned why anyone needs that information in the first place?
