Officially the Pentagon Talon program is shut down

I wish I could say that this one is good news.

A 4-year-old controversial data-gathering system called Talon is going to be shut down by the U.S. Department of Defense, intelligence officials announced.

The Threat and Local Observation Notices system collects data on anti-military protesters and peaceful demonstrators but newly sworn-in Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence James Clapper wants it dismantled, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

A statement said Clapper "has assessed the results of the Talon program and does not believe they merit continuing the program as currently constituted, particularly in light of its image in Congress and the media."

I did some checking on this one, there is a rumor that this one is a hat trick. It is shut down publicly in one spot while the data is moved into another program. Bottom line, the program still exists only under different authority.

Oh, and don't think that this is happening because it is a Republican administration. Clinton had his own versions of domestic monitoring.
