Drop the case

A bungled prosecution finally collapses of it's own weight

I'm glad that the charges in the Duke lacrosse team case have been dropped. I don't think they ever should have been brought given the history of the accuser. I think the case should have been dropped when the timeline started falling apart.

Maynard at TammyBruce.com had the best summary of the mess I have seen so far.

I'd say this is the story of another adult child.

Why do people come of age without having grown up? My theory is that childhood should be like a bicycle with training wheels. Kids need rules and restrictions, which are to be progressively lifted as they come of age and accept adult responsibilities.

Instead, our society pressures us to do the opposite. You probably heard about the recent court ruling that protected a juvenile's right to free speech in posting vulgar slander about the school principal on MySpace. It's becoming more difficult to restrict a child's "free expression" (unless that expression involves an affirmation of Christian faith, which of course must be silenced).

Later, when the child grows up and gets a job, he'll be required to sign off on a long list of things he's not allowed to talk about in the "wrong" way...race, gender, transgender status, ethnicity, orientation, etc. etc. (Sort of like the bad old days of McCarthyism, when everyone was expected to sign a loyalty oath. But that's a topic for another post.)

In other words, we treat kids like adults and adults like kids. And then we wonder why we get so many screwballs running around.

Jesse Jackson still thinks the players are guilty. I want to put special emphasis on this because I think it sums up the attitude that the case was built on. According to many, the players were guilty because the young lady was a (gods I hate using this term) "black" of the "lower class." It's playing on White Guilt again. The "white man" isn't guilty because of the evidence, but because we deserve to be guilty based on past treatment of (insert oppressed group here).

By the way, LaShawn Barber has probably the best blogging on the case, you can find her latest post on the subject here. This is one of those cases where I have to be careful with what I say because I am a "white" hetrosexual male.

If someone can figure out how to remove "race" from being part of cases like this, I really would appreciate it.
