"Stop, or I'm going to shoot. And if you run, I'm going to kill you."

Passerby stops murder of woman by her husband in store parking lot

I won't deny I am conflicted on gun control.

I don't like guns.

But then I read about things like this.

"She was screaming, 'Help, he's trying to kill me!' She was rolling on the ground, trying to get out of the way, but he kept stabbing her. He stabbed her about 20 times in the neck, back and arms."

As the attack continued, people were yelling at the man to stop and honking their horns, Stuckey said. She said she called 911.

"He was just standing over her hacking away," said Dolly Baker, who had just left the Save-A-Lot store next door when she saw the attack.

Baker said she watched the man pour gasoline on the victim then try to strike a match.

"He was literally trying to kill that lady in broad daylight," she said.

Baker said a passer-by stopped the attack.

"He told the man, 'Stop, or I'm going to shoot. And if you run, I'm going to kill you,' " Baker said.

The man held Watson at bay until police arrived at the scene.

The attacker was the lady's husband.

Literally no one could do anything until the passerby pulled his gun and made a stand.

There were no police. There were no friendly security guards. There was nothing to stop a murder except one man and a few pounds of steel.

Is it irresponsible to point out this kind of vigilante behavior? I guess it could be.

But you know, I keep thinking about the shootings that have made headlines over the years, especially the high profile ones. Schools, post offices, restaurants, parking lots. It doesn't matter. The police are there after the fact. I can't help but wonder how many lives would have been saved if there had been just a few responsible people with guns who were willing to use them doing the right thing.

There is at least one woman who is thankful that someone carried a gun.

You won't see many stories like this in the press. There is an enormous anti-gun bias, as if pretending that guns only cause violence would eliminate the many, many times that guns kept things from getting worse.

There was a cartoon that circulated after 9-11. It showed hijackers surrounded by passengers, each of who carried a gun. The hijackers were very surprised and about ready to surrender.

There is no doubt that some glory in the power that a gun gives them over others. But that can only happen if they are the only people carrying weapons. Remove that advantage, and those sorry deluded souls become just another bully.

I am still conflicted on guns. I guess I always will be. But there is no denying that the people who want to deny others guns don't want people to fight back. It doesn't matter if it is some nut out to shoot up a public space or an over eager police officer out to prove his manhood.

And just as every police officer isn't an out-of-control power tripper, every gun owner isn't out to create another Columbine.

Gun laws won't keep guns out of the hands of criminals. The only people who benefit from gun laws are those who need to be controlled themselves.

Hat tip Nobody's Business.
