More citizen disarmament

Police chief thinks that even tasers are too much

So tell me, in a free society, why should the police be better armed than the rest of us?

A new, mass market Taser will hit store shelves this April, which is unsettling to some law enforcement officials.

The C2, a sleek, colored model, can fit in a purse and stun someone for up to 30 seconds. The Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association said they are considering pushing for legislation to ban Tasers for civilians.

"In that 30 seconds, in the hands of the wrong person that's shooting the police officer, that individual can grab the police officers gun. That individual can use that gun on the police officer ... can kick a police officer to death," said Apple Valley Police Chief Scott Johnson. "That's really a safety hazard, in our opinion, for the officer on the street."

This is an example of the sort of thinking that helped make me a reluctant gun advocate.

I don't like the idea of guns, I really don't.

But think about it. This police chief doesn't believe that people can be trusted with a non-lethal weapon. That only police possess the presence of mind to "properly" use it.

Again, I want to remind people that making a weapon illegal DOES NOT keep that weapon out of the hands of criminals. It only keeps weapons out of the hand of law abiding citizens.

Unfortunately, it seems some law enforcement officers can't be bothered to tell the difference.
