The "anchor babies"

"Immigration-control advocates regard the U.S.-born infants as "anchor babies" because they give their undocumented parents and relatives a way to petition for citizenship. They estimate that 360,000 of these babies are born in the U.S. every year and warn that the numbers are rising.

Once parents have an "anchor baby," they become more difficult to deport, said Jack Martin, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a lobby organization in Washington, D.C."

I live in Arizona. The crime problems I see from immigration aren't necessarily because of immigration, but because we overlook crimes by illegals because they are illegals while at the same time conditioning people to depend on the government for their every need.

Like Milton Friedman, I don't think it's possible to have immigration reform without welfare reform. I think that ignoring welfare reform while pushing immigration reform will only lead to draconian solutions that will make the welfare demands worse.

So on the one hand, you have articles like this detailing the measurable cost to taxpayers and other institutions.

Rising numbers of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America are streaming into Texas to give birth, straining hospitals and costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, health officials say.

Doctors and health officials say they are overwhelmed by both the new arrivals and those immigrant mothers who already are in the state. Even Houston's feeling the pinch. An estimated 70 percent to 80 percent of the 10,587 births at Ben Taub General Hospital and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital last year were to undocumented immigrants, administrators say.

Also feeling the strain is Starr County, an already poor South Texas county that has the region's only taxpayer-supported hospital district.

Immigrants "want a U.S.-born baby" and know that emergency room staffers don't collect any money up front, said Dr. Mario Rodriguez, an obstetrician in Starr County.

"The word is out: Come to Starr County and get delivered for free. Why pay $1,000 in Mexico when you can get it for free?" Rodriguez said.

The problem is also widespread in California, and to a lesser extent in New Mexico and Arizona.

And on the other hand, you have articles like this detailing attacks on the existing border fence.

A National Guard unit assigned to Operation Jump Start observed a vehicle attempt to drive through the International Border fence near the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

Yesterday, at 8:30 a.m., the National Guard unit was patrolling the border area in a helicopter when the pilot and Border Patrol agent observer spotted a white-colored vehicle attempting to drive over a portion of the primary border fence. The fence had been cut away from its supports by a blowtorch. Once cut, the vehicle then rammed the fence and pushed it down. While attempting to use the downed fence as a ramp, the vehicle became stuck. Witnesses in Mexico reported upwards of twenty individuals exiting the vehicle and running back into Mexico.

Units from the Tijuana Police Department arrived on scene and seized the blowtorch equipment that had been used to cut the fence. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents arrived to take custody of the vehicle used in the failed attempt. Record checks were conducted on the vehicle's plates and it was determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen. The vehicle was taken to the San Ysidro Port of Entry where searches by K-9 and non-intrusive devices were performed. These searches yielded negative results and the vehicle was turned over to the San Diego Police Department.

So here is my position.

I support immigration and emigration both, with two and only two provisos.

One, immigrants and emigrants can not depend financially on the state, they have to pay their own way. No taxpayer funds to support any goods, services, or outright giveaways.

Granted, I don't think anyone should benefit from government funded social services, but there is no way on Earth I will support immigration if it allows welfare benefits of any kind.

Two, threaten the person or property of someone already here, and you get deported permanently. No hope of appeal.

Without those two conditions, I can not and WILL NOT support any immigration "reform."
