UPDATE: Teen Cancer Case

Temporary reprieve from court ordered chemotherapy.

This is an update to a story I originally linked to here. A higher court overturned the decision.

Accomack County Circuit Court Judge Glen Tyler on Tuesday suspended lower court orders that the parents of Abraham Cherrix take their son to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk this week and give their consent to whatever treatment the hospital deems necessary.

The judge also returned full custody of Abraham to his parents, pending a Circuit Court trial scheduled for Aug. 16.

I just want to focus for a moment on that idea of "ordered consent." Doe that have anything to do with forced consent?

Interesting, considering the quote I posted yesterday on coercing consent.

While I understand that the law is intended to protect juveniles from harm from their guardians, I really question the power that a Department of Social Services or a Child Protective Agency. I've seen the laws misused more than I have seen them used well.

There will always be "justification" for more government power. What we need are people with wisdom to strike down laws that threaten freedom and individual rights.

If we "protect someone for their own good." where do we draw the line? Should we prevent someone from eating that steak? What about the home workshop? That is pretty dangerous. Some people probably shouldn't have credit cards. Or sex.

Open the door a crack and you will get an avalanche.

Sixteen is old enough to know your own mind. Let the young man make his own choice and accept the responsibility.
