Yesterday and todayDemocracy is blooming in
Iraq
Yesterday was the reason why Saddam Hussein had
to be removed from power. Yesterday was the day that Iraqis demanded freedom.
Even if they didn't believe in democracy, Iraqis demanded the freedom to be
heard.
Some reports put the turnout at over 11 million, which would mean that about 75% of the voters turned out. This is not going to stop at the Iraq border. It is the one thing that tyrants can't defend against. Somebody's brother's mother's cousin got to vote and has the purple finger to show for it. It means that the end of terror is in sight. Not for the bully Americans, although some have seen it for some time. But for all those in the Middle East who live under oppression. All those in sub-Saharan Africa who have been forced to submit to Islam. All those in Israel who live in the fear of suicide bombers. Islamist terror is doomed. Yesterday proved it. George W. Bush made some huge mistakes, he is still making them. But whatever else he has done, that election yesterday was the most important in the President's life. George Bush did one thing exactly right. And that is more than most Presidents ever do. Democracy is blooming in Iraq. For centuries, no one thought that could happen. Not in 1258, not in 1932, not in 1968, not in 1979, not in 1990, and not in 2000. Democracy is blooming in Iraq. Not smoothly and predictably, not without trouble, and not without missteps. But democracy is blooming in Iraq. Syria is now surrounded by democracies. Iran has a huge border with an emerging democracy whose citizens in just three years have gained a higher standard of living than most of the people in Iran. Saudi Arabia is looking very nervous. Not only is democracy blooming in Iraq, but the Iraqis will fight to defend their freedom. They already have the core of a second tier military, in a few years I have no doubt it will be a first tier. The Middle East is going to be a very different place. It will take time, there is no question about that. Today, democracy is blooming in Iraq. And freedom is spreading. Posted: Fri - December 16, 2005 at 04:39 AM
