"1984" and "Ministry of Truth" no longer fiction?

Rewriting history to "get Bush"

I just had a very unsettling experience and it worries me.

One of the lists I belong to has turned into very little more than a CRUSADE against President Bush. That doesn't bother me so much, I think there are things he needs to answer for.

But two of the topics that came up were Mr. Bush's cutting of levee funds for New Orleans and the Federal government turning away the Red Cross.

We debated on the second for a while, but I think I finally produced enough proof to show that it was the Louisiana state officials who turned away aid. And yes, that is what inspired the "Faux" news comments on a previous post.

But the first topic caused some problems. See, Mr. Bush isn't the first President to cut funding for New Orleans levees, Bill Clinton did more than his fair share as well. This isn't getting any play in the media, who overlook the fact that the flooding problems in New Orleans predate Bush vs. Gore.

Unfortunately, the Times-Picayune of New Orleans only keeps their articles online for 14 days. Which means that unless you have access to Lexis-Nexis or microfilm copies of the paper from 1995, the only web source is a bunch of right wing blogs quoting each other and Lexis-Nexis.

Even though I explained that the information was available through Lexis-Nexis, not one other person was willing to put in the time to go to their local library and confirm it. Instead, the whole thing was dismissed as a right-wing attack on Clinton.

History has been rewritten for political expediency. Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Reality is now limited to what can be linked to on the internet.

Worrisome.
