News & opinion from a libertarian angle

Government IS NOT your friend!

Invoking extremes just makes things worse. Government usually creates more problems to solve the problems it already created.

I had a blog, a big ole political blog with all sorts of entries and spanning two blogging platforms. It went through a catastrophic data scramble. Some content was lost. So here are the old directory links. As I find it useful, I'll probably end up rewriting it and putting in the new blog. But there are some mixups.

  • As I said, I live in AZ. What's being reported in the news is not what people are saying.

I'm also a news junkie, here's my watching headlines page.

Here are a couple of recent additions.

Fauci omits context, feeds alarm with warning of 100,000 coronavirus infections a day
“Estimates by other U.S. public health authorities and academic researchers indicate we may have already far surpassed 100,000 new infections per day, the vast majority of them mild and/or asymptomatic.”

Georgia Is Doing Fine, Thank You
“The first-to-reopen state maintains a Covid-19 death rate well below those of northeastern states—though you’d never know it from the media coverage.”

Stanford doctor: Coronavirus fatality rate for people under 45 'almost 0%'

COVID-19 is close to losing its epidemic status in the U.S., according to the CDC
“The percentage of coronavirus deaths in the country has been declining for ten straight weeks.”

I didn't have a working political blog when the pandemic first hit, so my lexicon entry. As I wrote there,

"There's also been deliberate confusion between “cases” and those testing positive for the virus. Most people do not show symptoms. Standard treatment usually doesn't include viral screening. Medical professionals treat the symptoms and test for the virus only if the disease is virulent or persistant.

The panic is unprecedented. Measures have been far more drastic than those taken during 1918, 1968, 2009, and the AIDS pandemic. Before 2020 there were no state-wide quarantines, no state-wide business closures, no state-wide lockdowns, no National Guard, and no massive unrelenting fear mongering. The 2009 pandemic is especially relevent, since deaths were on the same scale and presumably just as infectious. But that is a problem, the current data is fudged.

EXPERTS will claim that the drastic measures saved lives. But we don't know how many in the general population would have had a higher risk. All we have is unreliable death numbers and the projections. There's no real baseline. We don't have the actuality."

I expect it will take years to sort out, but I'm pretty sure this was politically motivated. I am no fan of Trump, but this was a deliberate attempt to crash the economy so Trump would look bad. And when that didn't pan out, the riots started.

  • Usually it's more trouble than it's worth to call you out on some of your "statements."

In the case of "satanic ritual abuse," the accusations screwed up the lives of those accused and the kids who were psychologically manipulated by "adults" into giving and believing false testimony. That's called brainwashing, and doing to to children is unspeakable.

Since you don't have proof of your allegations, I'm going to call you out every time you make the claim.

  • It was left up to the states. In most cases, they were chosen by the state legislatures. There were some issues, but afterwards the law of unintended consequences kicked in big time. It certainly wasn't planned, but combined with some of the campaign finance "reform" laws over the years, U.S. Senators became kingmakers and gatekeepers in state politics. One of the worst offenders was the late John McCain in my own state. Unless it was a minor office, you didn't get on the Republican ballot without his approval.

Speaking of unintended consequences, look at the panic reaction to COVID-19. Most of that happened on the state level. Looking back at the original justifications, social distancing and face masks were never intended to save lives, just "flatten the curve" so all the deaths didn't happen at once. When the virus turned out to be much less dangerous than the original projections, suddenly stuff started becoming political. It's turned out to be one of the biggest economic disruptions in history with almost no public health benefits. Politicos and technocrats are hardly ever held responsible, and their recommended solution is more government to fix the problems causes by government action to fix the problems caused by government intervention and so on.

  • If Hoover had kept his hands off, things would have bounced back quickly.

Prohibition, the drug war, direct election of Senators, and the income tax. About the only thing that really worked out was giving women the vote.

  • It's an idea that I've been telling people for years. Government is not your friend, and government agents aren't really concerned with The Greater Good.
