Reagan did bend and break the law, but that wasn't what I was referring to.
Democrats called Reagan excessively patriotic and the "teflon President" because the majority of the American public overlooked his misstatements, foibles and mistakes so long as Reagan put America first. The Carter administration told Americans what Americans were doing wrong. Reagan made it "morning in America" and was immensely popular.
Democrats then (as now) were selling guilt.
