Giving away the choice

I wrote earlier about marriage registration versus marriage licensing.

We used to register marriages in this country, not license them.

I think this is the unintended consequence.

Americans joined government and religion at the hip and demanded that government define what makes a marriage. That government decides who could participate.

That the benefits of marriage be given only to those worthy.

We ceded our right to choose our morality to government functionaries.

And now we’re upset when that went drastically wrong?

Americans demanded that government “protect” us and our institutions so we could deny rights to those we didn’t like.

We gave up control to government. We gave up choice to government.

All so those we don’t like wouldn’t get in on the benefits of our hubris.
