Politics and sex appealWhy libertarianism is not wildly
popular
There is a saying in libertarian circles that
liberals want to "mommy" everyone and conservatives want to "daddy"
everyone.
There is a certain justification to that. I think that is one reason why more people aren't libertarians. The heart of both the conservative argument and the liberal argument is emotional. The heart of libertarianism is freedom and reasoning. That doesn't mean we don't get emotional about it. It just means that liberty is not based on passion. Libertarians don't have to discipline you when you are bad. We don't have to comfort you when you need it. We may choose to do so, but out politics don't demand that we do so. Mess with another's freedom, and you'll get more passionate reactions then anything else. KYFHO all the way. But that doesn't get most people excited because they believe that the Nanny-State is good for them and is Looking Out For Them. They don't believe that the people who run the Nanny-State would pimp them out and sell their grandchildren's organs. They think their freedom is protected Because Nanny-State Says So. Not so. I'll tell you now. You're probably not listening but I will still tell you now. Every thing that you depend on the Nanny-State for will cost you more in freedom. You may feel very good while it is happening, but that doesn't stop the price you are paying. Oral sex can make you feel pretty good, but it doesn't mean that someone isn't going to lift your wallet. How much will your excitement cost you? Will their sex appeal hit your bank account? What happens after you don't have anything else to give? No one except libertarians take libertarians seriously until they have been badly burned by the alternatives. Posted: Thu - March 30, 2006 at 11:53 PM
